Meet Flavia Tata Nardini

Co-founder and CEO, Fleet Space Technologies

Flavia, rocket scientist extraordinaire, is the face behind one of Australia’s most exciting space startups, Fleet Space Technologies. From 2018, Flavia and her team will launch 100 nanosatellites into space, connecting billions of sensors that will track and change industries and ecologies around the world. And they’re starting with the Great Barrier Reef.

Reef 1 is the first pilot project from Fleet Space Technologies, a new deep-water sensor installed off Green Island, near Cairns, to track and monitor water quality and temperature over the next several months. By connecting the sensor via satellite, Reef 1 will collect data on the health of the Reef in real-time, to ensure that researchers and the general public can better understand, and act on, the issues at hand.

Open data for all

Due to the remote nature of the Reef, water and temperature sensor data historically needed to be collected manually. Using Fleet’s nanosatellite technology, Reef 1 will transmit data to partners including Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and GreenCollar.

For the first time, the data will be made available to the general public, in near real-time, through Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, giving everyone a better understanding of what’s going on under the waves. The information gathered will be used to help the Reef’s survival and stop further devastation.

A connected future

Reef 1 is the beginning of a sensor-wide array Fleet will launch to provide a clearer picture of what’s happening on the Great Barrier Reef. By deploying more modules, connected via Fleet’s nanosatellite technology, the Reef array will give everyone more information on how climate change is affecting the reef.

We started Fleet to help solve some of Earth’s biggest challenges … and there are few more pressing issues than saving one of Earth’s greatest and most majestic wonders.

Unite for the reef.

Together, we can ease the pressures that the reef faces - but we need your support to do it. Because it’s only when we’re united as Citizens, that our individual actions can come together to make a real, physical impact on the Great Barrier Reef.
